strange noise "ddrrrrr" from 3100 to 3300 revs

I can hear this strange noise "dddrrrrrrrrrrrrr" from 3100 to 3300 revs. after that everything is fine. any idea? E34 525i 90

update? does this happen in any gear? I have more of a buzzing noise that comes from behind the steering column area between 2600-3100 rpm

Ok this is a long shot but my car makes a noise around this engine speed but its only noticable with the bonnet open when the car is stationary.

My problem is the gasket where the exhaust joins the manifold (I think).

I have managed to reduce the noise and seal it by putting exhaust paste around the join: yes i know its a bodge job!
