Got a '94 525. When the engine is warm there's a mechanical sound from the Vanos area that sounds like it has something to do with the timing chain. Every now and then it stops when idling but then comes back. Is this the Vanos noise?

sometimes you get some chain/tensioner noise out of m50s, i've never figured out the "vanos rattle" theres nothing to rattle with the vanos unit, it's just a bearing and piston

the vanos unit can pick up slight play. I had this problem and BMW has a "kit" out that includes a few washers that just remove any excess play, thus quieting the vanos unit. Worked great for me

Do you happen to have any part numbers for this "kit"? My Vanos has been growling for 2 years now.

Bill hi again,

the part numbers are as follows : 11361403824 stud, 11361403822 disk, 11361403823 disk, 361403550 diaphragm spring. Please note these numbers are as supplied by BMW South Africa. I sure hope this assists you.

I must admit when u see the parts, all 4 of them, and so damn small, u wonder just what justifies their price.

Take care

That's exactly what I was looking for. Bill R., have you seen this before? Looks like a thrust-type rebuild kit for the Vanos, to keep it from rattling back and forth in below-engagement speeds...

Whatcha think?

The Parts are called out in the list but not placed in the diagram.

I put in 12/95 as build date, and here's what comes up:

later model vanos kit (http://rust.mine.nu/bmw/showparts.do?model=HD63&mospid=45167&prod=19951200&btnr=11_1437&hg=11&fg=25)

Would any veteran M50 guys take a gander and comment on whether you've seen this setup before? It looks like it adds 4mm of thrust washer, and a diaphragm spring between the two thrust washers. Wonder how it looks assembled? Anyone have pics of a later model M50 (late '95 build) head in the VANOS area?

Might be worth investigating...

i don't really see anything different, mabie thrust washer thickness is different. the vanos unit itself acts on 13 and 5 to advance the cam with a oil pressure driven piston with a gear that goes around 13 and inside of 5, when engauged the piston pushes in playing the gears off one another advancing the intake cam and pressure against the gears forces the piston out retarding the intake cam back to tdc

forth motion on that gear too.... I haven't seen one yet but I work on very few m50's.... and the etk shows that they all come that way after 3/95. There would have to be some play between the vanos gear and the cam gear even when the vanos is engaged and this spring looks like it would dampen any movement.

i've yet to see one without the diaphram spring out of 20-30 and some are pretty noisey

Bill hi again. From my own experience and from having worked at a BMW dealership for a few years and having seen at least a few of these done to both m50's as well as um...eng no??? 3.0l m3..sorry forgot the eng number now. It does work. My eng was more than noisy and is now a hell of alot quieter, not to mention that my torque curve now "seems" to be better. I do not have this terrible slingshot effect anymore.

I may be able to get some pics of the mod. I will see what can be arranged and let u know should anything come up.
