By doing the associated testing, I have confirmed that my auxilliary fan is seized up to the point that a replacement is necessary. My question, has any one ever installed a universal fan instead of coughing up 350.00 plus for the OEM? I'm sure there are better designs to be had at a lot cheaper price. I'll bite the OEM bullet if i have to. My car still is running R12 and will freeze you out. Any suggestions appreciated.

Ebay seller "lnmsales" always has complete direct replacement aftermarket aux fan assemblies for $197

I've bought other items from them in the past, good seller.

My plan was to use a Flex-a-lite fan. They are available through summit racing and cost about $80 each for the generic reversible cooling fan.

Thanks Gale and Derek. Derek I was thinking along the same lines as I had bookmarked Flex-a Lites's web page. A little wire splicing for the temp. sensor and looks like you can get it done. Just have to get at least a 16 inch diameter one. Gale it is amazing how some shops can sell the same OEM item for so much less. It is good to have choices.
Thanks,
Will

When the fan siezed on my '80 528i, I was able to remove the fan blade, clean the debris out, relube the bearing(s) and get it working again. It was still working when I sold the car 3 years later. Not sure how similar the E34 fan is.
