View Full Version : Think I'm gonna re-adjust the valves... .013 sounds like hell

Too much ticking, I'm not sure if it's a damaged valve or what, but I'm gonna open up the cover, check for damage from the spray bar incident, and tighten em down a bit. Bentley says .014 hot, .012 cold... I'm going to do at least .012, does anybody run .011? Any performance/idle issues? My idle is fine on this car, minimal vaccum leaks, new cap/rotor, fresh O2 sensor.

the tighter you put the lash the less vaccum at idle, if you have a good idle then I'd try it at .011 and see if the chatter goes away. If it doesn't then you know that there is something wrong in there.

i like to do my valve adjustments with it as hot as i can stand it, i do a lot more m20's then anything else, those are .10 cold .12 hot i like .11 hot, i haven't really worked up a custom m30 setting

When this happens to me Tim I find that it's usually my technique. I now do all the valves twice and each time doublecheck the gap with the next size up gauge. I find that about 1/2 the time after the first "adjust attempt" I can get the next size up feeler in. Whoops.

Agree with Jeff...very easy to make a mistake. I try to check mine twice as well. My big six sounds pretty good at a slip .013" cold for intake and exhaust which is probably similar to .012" hot which Winfred likes.

Set it to a tight .011 dead cold, and all the valve noise is gone. Not quite as responsive or sensitive, but it's quiet enough so I can hear that unnerving bottom-end noise... gotta love those 200k+ motors! :)
