My 94' 525 with 160k miles on it has really started to run weak. When I excelerate from a stop light the car seems real slugish and starts to com on strong at about 4000rpm. Even at rooling excelerations from 50mph it is kind of a dog unless you realy kick it. The cars fuel economy has also been sufuring. When excelerating, the fuel economy needle flutters up and down as it dogs along.
What can be done to restore the power and performance in this car.
Thanks almighty men of machines and speed.

start simple. replace your O2 sensor. its easy to do.. plenty of novices have done it on here and there are instructions availiable on bmwe34.net. try that and see if that solves it.

there has been much debacle about where to get the cheapest o2 sensor. i say just call up BMA (888 BMA 3911) and get one.

I would actually start with the maintenance first. With the mileage you have...spark plugs and filters including fuel. It can also be a bad coil or a bad fuel pump, vanos problem, MAF, etc. Start with the real simple stuff, plugs and filters.

Then check the fault codes using the stomp test for any stored codes.

Some questions:

Did the condition start after you filled-up the gas tank?
How long has this been going on?
Has it gotten worse?
Exactly describe how the engine runs in different rpms and loads, right on start-up and after warmed up.
