Sorta OT: License plates in Internet Pics.

Is there really a need to hide license plates in internet pics? I just have to ask because everyone seems to protect their plate like it is sensitive information. Meanwhile it is public info all day when you drive or park your car. I don't mean to rant, I just want to know if I am missing something.

even if one would have your plate #, where do you go to find out where that car is? is there like somewhere on the internet that you can enter in the # and out pops the owners residence? police can do this but can the public..? i tend to see many expensive cars that are for sale to have their plates hidden, i always thought it was to protect it from being stolen.. hmm
