View Full Version : Cam Timing tool M60 Whats wrong?

As I completed process of disassembly to do the timing in the morning:

I break out my cam tool kit that I bought last year. I worked on one side and a friend worked on the other. He mentioned the cams were pretty far off so I turned them as he slid the blocks on. As I was starting to put the valve covers on I noticed something peculiar while glancing at the cams on the right side. I felt really uneasy.

Sure enough. Car did not want to idle and had to drive it carefully until I received another kit.

All back together with about 6 degrees advance on both. Might retard the exhaust 12 from where it is. Power band comes on hard at 4K and pulls harder through 5k. Still would like some 3K rpm love.

Since I did it twice already a third would be even easier. If you take the allen off the tool you can set one cam different than the other using just the exhaust tool and turning the crank.

Impressed at the mileage increase. Never could get more than 16. Now I'm getting 18.06 and that's with 5 or 6 60-80 runs and a run up to 130. Still need to study the cam timing before I retard the exhaust.

From your pictures Intake is about 1-2 degrees and exhaust about 4 degrees. Amazing the difference when applied wrong. Just them few degrees made quite a difference but it may have been a different degrees setup with the cam blocks reversed. Still didn't study but thinking of retarding the exhaust timing. Mayby a 117 lobe center vs a 112, it's not a racecar but a turn on about 3k be real nice. It's gonna happen but need backup before this happens.

I ordered another kit that same day when I realized I had 2 blocks for the same side. Car ran bad but it ran, stalled etc. There was nothing I could do so I waited a few days and then redone both sides with the new kit. Driver side was way off. The exhaust was loping like I had race cams in it, above idle it ran okay.

So according to this from Rick M he retarded the intake and advanced the exhaust

I advanced both appx 6 degrees and want to retard the exhaust 4-6 from stock. I may be reading it wrong... I already advanced the exhaust, 'and the intake.


He retarded the intake 14 degrees
and advanced the exhaust 6 degrees.

Something confusing about reading his stuff, I think there is more than one error here.

So according to his post I went the wrong way with the intake. Idonno man. Have to think about this much more.

In my workings with what I want is more low to mid range so I would want less overlap, IE advance the intake and retard the exhaust to achieve it. SO now All I should need to do is step 2, retard the exhaust. Or put the intake stock and retard the exhaust. This dual pattern cam and being able to put both anywhere you want them kinda messing up my mind.

380 miles and full again. 17.7 based on 379 miles which was about 320 city. Not too shabby for 10% ethanol subsidized fuel.

Just posting for my own confusion.

Okay I was visualizing this incorrectly. Exhaust opens first so advancing crank degrees retards the exhaust and advances the intake.

He retarded the intake 14 degrees and
advanced the exhaust 6 degrees

So what I did was advance the cams appx 6 degrees which
advanced the intake 6 degrees and
retarded the exhaust 6 degrees.

So to get the intake right I have to adjust both intake and exhaust all over because the intake sprocket is chained to the exhaust... So do intake correct -12 degrees and tighten, then move crank x degrees to advance the exhaust to where it is right now.

Maybe, not sure. Degreeing a single cam was not confusing at all... lol
