Strange, someone was asking me if a E36 sedan rear door also fits on an E36 M3 (yes, it does), so to check I used my 98 M3 VIN and both rear doors are NLA
Door rear left 41528185429 ENDED
Door rear right 41528185430 ENDED

41528185429 Door rear left From:09/01/1993 To:12/30/2008 (ENDED), Supersedes: 41521960231(10/01/1990 — 11/25/1993)
checked on realoem and bmwfans, both say NLA

these p/n's are only for U.S. models, the EURO rear doors are still available with different p/n, EURO rear doors:
left 41 52 8 185 427
right 41 52 8 185 428

no idea what the differences are between US and EURO rear doors. Any ideas? Are they interchangeable?

Side intrusion bars are a common addition to later production, but may be optional on M3? Alternatively, side air bags but probably they weren't available until e46(?)

My US 02/1998 E36 M3 has side airbags, even had to go to BMW for a recall on this, BMW Japan of course did not know about this, as that was for US cars, so I gave them a copy of the recall and they did the reprogramming on my car free of charge and washed the car and I got a free coffee.

AIR BAGS:SIDE/WINDOW recall/defect on 1998 BMW M3 Build Years/Makes/Models: 1997 - 1999 BMW M3 Units affected: 16749 Recall Number: 99V063001

Summary: VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: PASSENGER VEHICLES. THESE VEHICLES ARE BUILT WITH A SIDE AIR BAG SYSTEM CONSISTING OF DOOR-MOUNTED THORAX AIR BAGS (REAR DOOR AIR BAGS ARE OPTIONAL), A CENTRAL ELECTRONIC SENSOR AND DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM, LEFT AND RIGHT SATELLITE IMPACT SENSORS, AND ASSOCIATED WIRING. THIS SYSTEM IS UNDULY SENSITIVE TO CERTAIN NON-CRASH IMPACTS, SUCH AS CONTACTING LARGE POTHOLES OR CURBS AT SUBSTANTIAL SPEED.

Consequence: THIS COULD CAUSE THE SIDE AIR BAG TO DEPLOY WITHOUT AN ACTUAL SIDE CRASH. IN ADDITION, THE BATTERY SAFETY TERMINAL (BST) COULD ALSO ACTIVATE, DISCONNECTING THE STARTER CABLE FROM THE BATTERY. IN THIS CASE, THE VEHICLE'S ELECTRICAL SYSTEM COULD CONTINUE TO OPERATE AND THE ENGINE WOULD CONTINUE TO RUN, BUT AFTER STOPPING, COULD NOT BE RESTARTED.
Remedy: DEALERS WILL REPROGRAM THE CENTRAL COMPUTER CONTROL MODULE THAT REGULATES THE PERFORMANCE OF ALL OF THE VEHICLE'S OCCUPANT PROTECTION SYSTEMS.
Notes: OWNER NOTIFICATION BEGAN FEBRUARY 7, 2000. OWNERS WHO TAKE THEIR VEHICLES TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER ON AN AGREED UPON SERVICE DATE AND DO NOT RECEIVE THE FREE REMEDY WITHIN A REASONABLE TIME SHOULD CONTACT BMW AT 1-800-831-1117. ALSO CONTACT THE NATIONAL HIGHWAY TRAFFIC SAFETY ADMINISTRATION'S AUTO SAFETY HOTLINE AT 1-888-DASH-2-DOT (1-888-327-4236).

Of course, all the safety and pollution options begin on US-bound production. Was that for all e36 sedan/touring models or just M3?

No wonder you had a recall ;-) They must have been surprised to see an e36 turn up after 20 years! (Good for you!). Gotta love proper service- that they still look after you. If you were a commodity Toyota, Lexus, Nissan, Ford or GM owner they'd say no (somehow) and laugh as you leave...

only 1997 - 1999 BMW M3 U.S. spec, Units affected: 16749.
I had it done in Japan, of course they did not know of this recall for U.S. spec cars, but I was well prepared with a copy of the recall, they contacted German HQ and did it, incl. free coffeee and car wash.
At the same time they did another recall on that car

Correction: The crankshaft position sensor needs to be replaced with the same type of sensor that is currently being used on the M52TU engine. Along with replacing the sensor an adapterharness must also be installed in order to supply the sensor with a 12V operating voltage instead of the 5 volts currently being supplied by the DME. NOTE: SOME VEHICLES LISTED IN DCS MAY ALREADY HAVE THE NEW STYLE SENSOR INSTALLED, FOR THESE VEHICLES A CHECK/VERIFICATION WILL ONLY BE NEEDED.

Procedure: The following steps must be followed when replacing the original M52 crankshaft sensor withthe new M52TU sensor.
1. Remove the crankshaft positionsensor which is located below the starter motor. Remove the Sensor (1)
If the sensor currently installed in the vehicle has a connector directly on the sensor which can be disconnected, then the new sensor is already installed. No further action is required and the DCS contact can be closed.
Note: Illustration shows location of component with air filter housing and air mass meter removed. It is not necessary to remove these components to perform this repair.
2. The electrical connection of the crankshaft sensor to the engine harness is located below the intake manifold.
To access this connector, the cap of the oil filter housing ( should be removed and the oil filter and housing should then be covered to prevent dirt from getting onto the oil filter.
3. Disconnect the crankshaft position sensor (1) from the engine harness.
Note: This illustration shows theplug connectors with the intake manifold removed. It is not necessary to remove the intake manifold in order to gain access to these connectors and complete this repair.
4. 4. Remove the fuel rail cover and unplug the VANOS solenoid valve plug connector (2).
5. 5. Install the new crankshaft position sensor (1) P/N 12 14 1 709 616 and O-ring P/N 12 14 1 748 398.
6. Install adapter harness P/N 12 51 4 592 703.
a. Connect (1) to the new crankshaft position sensor.
b. Connect (2) to the engine harness connector which was previously connected to the old crankshaft sensor located below the intake manifold.
c. Connect (3) to the VANOS solenoid valve located on the VANOS unit.
d. Connect (4) to the engine wiring harness connector which previously connected directly to the VANOS solenoid valve.
7. After the adapter harness has been installed secure the harness lead going to the VANOS solenoid valve (1) to the VANOS oil line with 2 cable ties (3). Note: The harness lead going to the VANOS solenoid valve should not be under tension. The harness lead should be able to move.
