Isn't there a pin that can get sheared off or it's sheared off already and needs to be replaced?

Can't find the write up. I have an e34 ix iT that needs to be moved and the shifter is stuck in Park.

thanks

The actual park mechanism is robust and unlikely to have failed. Disconnect the shift cable at the tranny end and try to shift the lever on the side by hand. If you can move it, the cable is stuck. Happens some times if the car has been standing for a few weeks. If you can't, the manual shift valve may be stuck. Replacement costs about $15 and can be done without dropping the whole valve body.

There is a plastic pin under the handle which can break and then blocks the shifter. Here a drawing, officially called pull road, # 11 http://bmwfans.info/parts-catalog/E34-Sedan/Europe/520i-M50/L/jan1990/browse/gearshift/gearshift_automatic_transmission/

There is also an electric solenoid in the shift console that is activated by the brake peddle.

It is an iX so will be a Euro car. They don't normally have the shift lock solenoid and have the 5 speed auto.
