524td manual transmission

Can any one tell me what manual transmissions will fit a 1985 524td? Thanks.

That'd be an E28 524td? I think it is an M20 based engine, if so any M20 based gearbox should fit, but check the gear-ratios will be the same as the original box, else it will be a nightmare to drive. With any luck, the diesels only had different final-drive ratios to the petrols, but I doubt it...

May be better to find someone to fix the box you have?

Thanks for the answer. I know a lot of 524 owners have made swaps so I think its fairly common. And I will certainly check the differential issue. Thanks for the advice.

He means the final drive ratio of the transmission compared to any replacement trans.

He means the final drive ratio of the transmission compared to any replacement trans.Yes, you will need to verify that the box you put in came from a 524TD. If from another model, check that the internal ratios are not different. (Compare Owner's manuals, you'll find them all listed under the Specifications at the back)
