Update: These are in no way originals. The one on my hood had some oxidation and had to wax it off. The one on the trunk looks like it has leprocy between the layers on the white part, that will not wipe off.

Picked up 2 of these and they came in today. Ad said made in china but these really appear to be genuine. It has the BMW logo on the back side and BMW sticker with part # on it also says made in Germany.

I paid 1.88 each and they are now 2.88 No idea if they are all genuine but I was pleasantly surprised. Hope you get lucky too!

Someone bought 40 at once, that's when the price went up. They must all be the real thing.

It is a copy as per the the Ebay auction:

Condition: New Primary Color: Black
Country/Region of Manufacture: China Brand: AC Autotechnic Manufacturer Part Number: 00

Price is fine, you will see in 1 year if the logo peels off or not.

It might be a copy but from inspecting it, they look to be real. Remember the Chinese can't read much English or German. This could be the deal, order one yourself and check them out. If these are counterfeit then these are the best I ever saw by any standards. I have purchased cheap imports and they are nothing close as these, bar none.

Pick one up and reply Erich.

I think these are the crumby ones that go off in the sun. Probably 2-10x faster in Oz than anywhere, so I'll know before you guys.

AFAIK the better ones are made from aluminium sheet, printed and covered in a protective coating that gives it a deep lustrous finish that lasts much longer, totally unlike a bubble sticker.

The worst one (lasted barely months) was a fake chrome plastic shell just like this one. The logo however was a stick-on piece of clear acrylic (like those bubble stickers) with the logo printed on the lower side. The coating rounded off sharply around the edge, and 2mm thick in the middle. Looked unlike the original, but was not bad when new. However the UV turned it milky and fried it in short order.

I'll report back when I receive the one I ordered at 2.88- tell you if it is the same type.

still have some I bought from an Ebay auction in the U.K. 2 years ago for me and wrenching buddies for about the same price. One already complained that they did not last very long, see comments by genphreak.
If you are lucky, you got the better ones, but for sure 'original copies'. Or they dropped off a supply truck in China to the BMW factory there ;-)

I wish I knew for sure if any of the ones I have are authentic so I could compare them with these new ones. You can feel the chrome on the front like they were made for blind BMW entheusiasts.

I normally buy the BMA recommended ones at $16 odd dollars. They work out ok, I'm yet to see one go off like the fleabay ones.

Any comment in regards to the brail badge?

You mean all of yours have raised edges throughout the surface? I've never seen that... do post a pic. I'll update when I get one of these...

Yes, can feel everyting that is silver. My other badges have a little raise to them but not as pronounced. What I need to do is check out a badge on a newer BMW... hope I don't get shot or something stupid.

You do realise Jeff, that after all these years, this thread counts us, if not Erich, as totally and completely bimmernuts! I mean... this is extreme geekness.

Really, who else could be analysing propeller badges, other than a total bimmerpropellerhead?

hehe, especially the original fans are noticing such small details. Even the blue cleaning clotch comes in some designs, depending on models/built years. In 2010 I even refused to buy a copy, I wanted to have ORIGINAL crazy

There was a BMW today, was tempted to check the badge but there was too many people around. Better luck next time.

I ordered two and they just arrived. They are very similar to the one on my E46 bonnet which has the paint peeling off. The outer silver ring is also raised and so is the silver lettering. But on the boot, the outer ring is below the level of the black circle and the lettering seems to be covered with a clear surface film. So I think the front has already been replaced with a clone.

I could tell without even opening the bag that they were not original. Here is a pic together with an original part. For a bit of fun, let's see who spots the problem first

Your label looks a bit more convincing. I thought the paint on mine was speckled - until I realised there was a protective film on it :-)

The last one I posted was a random image I found. The ones I ordered has the BMW logo on the sticker with the numbers broken up wrong.

I got mine today. They are not the gel-sticker ones I was worried they might be!

They appear to be a domed aluminium disk stuck on a chrome bezel. How long the paint will last, the Aussie sun will soon tell us.

Mine have the fake packaging too, part number 1 stuck/piece sticker- 'Made in Germany' with the BMW logo to prove it.

The silver letters and edges of the roundel are a little raised, the reason is clear though- the thickness of the paint varies. I suspect the knock offs suffer from thin paint, which might be why these ones fade away in the sun. Either that, or the glue under the disk gives way and the logo flies off leaving just the chrome bezel- a dirty scab on the car's nose.

Just glued mine on the hood this afternoon. The old one broke a peg removing it so I simply took a small torks driver and busted the darn gromet. Nothing like a huge hole looking back at me. I siliconed it around the pegs and let it rest, if it don't blow off before the silicone dries it should be good. It really does look good to me, hopefully it wont fade like mentioned but if it does I have a spare! lol I need to get a bag of these little grommets so I can lose them when I need them...

There are 2 kinds of these grommets I learned. The aftermarket emblem are often multi-purpose, that means the small peg has 2 thicknesses, half of that is thinner, while the original ones are having only one diameter depending on the car. The shorter grommets will not hold this multi-purpose emblem. When I bought aftermarket emblems and gave it to my wrenching buddy, he complained they do not fit and fell out. Gave him new grommets and they work.

Just not summer there yet. If these were in a garage they would probably be fine but mine are out in the sun forever.
