All 1989–94 BMW vehicles equipped with a self diagnostic system have the ability to retrieve engine fault codes by counting MIL flashes. These are four-digit fault codes (pedal faults) and have different code numbers than those retrieved by the scan tool. Pedal fault codes can be retrieved with the ignition on, engine off, and with the gas pedal rapidly depressed to the floor five times without interruption.
See Table 4-6 for pedal code descriptions for 1989–94 models.

Important Tips for Reading Pedal Fault Codes
• Blink codes cannot be retrieved if the scan tool is communicating with the vehicle.
• Blink code retrieval can be used for comparison and backup to the scan tool.
• V12 engines have two ECMs, one for each engine bank. Codes need to be retrieved from each bank separately. The left engine bank is on the driver's side of the vehicle, which is
Bank 2. The right passenger side is Bank 1. Be aware that each bank's induction system (MAF sensor and intake runners) are physically located on the opposite bank. To access
the second ECM, depress the gas pedal to the floor six times. All cylinder 7–12 codes begin with a two.

Stomp test works only on U.S. specification cars, not on EURO, AU or Japan spec cars. For USA that was mandatory.

BMW MOTRONIC 'PEDAL' FAULT CODES (Models 1989-94)
All 1989-94 BMW vehicles are equipped with a self diagnostic system for the detection of injection faults. When a fault is detected by the system the Electronic Control Unit (ECU) records the code corresponding to the defect in the ECU's memory until either:
1) The vehicle battery or the ECU is disconnected.
2) The engine is started 60 times with no recurrence of the fault.
3) The ECU memory is cleared using the Bosch KTS300, CARSOFT BMW software or the CS1000 BMW hand scanner.

look at the ETM, there are no limits for region, where car was made.
For example e36: If you have not the check engine lamp in your dashboard, just connect 1,2w lamp to 8pin of dme connector and "+". Enjoy.

In ETM there are no limits of region, where car was made. You have not a check engine lamp in dash board? Connect the 1.2w lamp to pin of DME and "+". Turn on engine, dont start, and make a test.
For 3er e36 8pin and "+".
My car -DME3.1 m50, e36 for Germany, works good. Infact, you just have not wire from DME to instrument cluster.

For 5er 34 and 7er e32- 15pin of DME and "+".

Is self diagnostic reliable as scan tool?

It is the same. Basically the stomp test is the same as a Peake code reader will do. Then it depends very much on the built year of the car what faults you can read. For example on my 1988/11 E32 750 I can read much less codes with the Peake tool than on my 1998 E36 M3.

In case your car is a pre OBDII car like my E32 from 1988, then most of the newer tools will not work which one can buy on the net, for that Gert has something
