I have a Racing Dynamics cat back exhaust that has finally died at almost 400,000 miles. It probably has 150,000 on it. I'd like to replace the cat back with something slightly aggressive. Bav Auto lists a Billy Boat for over $900 which is way more than I'd like to spend.
Anyone do this project lately? Suggestions on components? There are 3 muffler/resonator parts and pipe involved.
I was looking at maybe using Flowmaster 409 stainless and welding up something custom but it sure would be nice to bolt in something in a couple hours.
The car has a Conforti chip, enlarged TB and free flow intake.

What kind of shape is the rest of the system in? I just had to replace my intermediate resonator. I stuck with the stock eberspracher stuff. My muffler is an e32 740i unit. It welds up just fine and has bigger tips. I fabbed up a muffler on my e28 and it was very boomy. I perfer the quiet of the factory stuff. What kind of budget are you looking at?

I just turned 250k on my 1990 535i - how original is your car still?

SuperSprint and Eisenmann are name brand stuff and pricy.

I think you are looking for Borla... not sure if they still makes it for the car anymore... they are very loud though.

Ansa exhaust is good... very close to factory sound and factory quality level.
Eberspaecher is OE.

I think the question is how long do you plan to keep the car vs. the expense.

Remember the internals all vary depending on the model. I reckon the best way to get an exhaust that will suit a larger intake (apart form buying a SuperSprint) would be to choose one from a larger car. The 740 and 750 mufflers are very different (same size), as are the resonators and pipes.

I recently put an Eisenmann stock muffler and resonator (insludes all pipes from the cat back) on a '90 525i as it was cheap.

Results: If it were any louder and I'd be pissed. And I don't mind it loud!

I'm shooting for 500k miles. The motor internals are stock. Bought the car from an Exxon Mobil engineer who used Mobil 1 15W50 since forever. I'm thinking of a couple flowmasters dual inlet, dual outlet and bent pipe in between. Before I do too much, I will take a very good look at the third muffler to see if I can keep using it. The other two are holy.

Check out also the full stainless B&B (http://www.bbexhaust.com/car/e34/) before you 'make' something up. They sure make some nice bling, like this one for the 535i (http://shop.bbexhaust.com/535-FBMW-0330.htm), RRP is $989.

Prices can probably be as low as $800-900 for cat-back if you are State-side, its cheaper if you can get a good deal from one of their resellers.
