My wife (bless her heart) was in the passenger seat on a drive today and reached over to the Onboard Computer to read the outside temp. Unfortunately, she hit the 'code' key without knowing it then proceeded to hit a bunch of other buttons and reset the 'code' to some unknown number. When we stopped for an errand, of course the car would not restart. I did manage to get it started - don't know how I did that. But now, when I hit the lefthand stalk to read data on the dash, all I can get it the outside temp.

Does anyone know how to reset the code if you don't know what the code is?

From an ald shogun post, go figure.

You can establish a code that will prevent the engine from being started unless the code is entered.

Establishing and activating
the code:
Stop the car engine.

Turn the igntion key to the RADIO position.

Press the CODE button. Display shows "- - - - CODE".

Enter the code with the function buttons (1000,100,10,1).

To store the input press the S/R button.

Turn the ignition key off - to position "0". Indicator lamp lights on the CODE button.

Car is under the code and does not start while to turn ignition key.

Deactivate the code:
Turn the igntion key to the RADIO position. Display shows "- - - - CODE".

Key in the code.

Press the S/R button. The time display appears.

Start engine.

Code lost or unknown:
If you do not have access to the code, the emergency de-activation procedure will have to be carried out.

Disconnect the battery for five minutes. Reconnect.

Turn the igntion key to the RADIO position.

Display shows timer counting down 15 minutes.

During this time press CODE, enter your code, press S/R, start engine.

that is then the new code you can decide, because the old code disappeared after 15 minutes battery removal.

see owners manual, here from E32, but same procedure

see pages 48

Instead of during this time you mean after this time, meaning after the 15 minutes has counted down then you enter a new code of your choosing.
