I just finished replacing the tensioners/idler pulley/WP/thermostat on my 2000 E39 and am left with two small parts that for the life of me I can't figure where they go! I have one expansion rivet and one 10mm bolt.
Somehow I had three of the expansion rivets. I used two to attach the fan shroud. Where does the third go?
The 10mm bolt is about 3/4" long and looks like one of the ones that holds the pulley to the water pump. I don't think it's one of these though as I'd trashed the old ones removing the fan and had to install new ones (and all four are indeed in place).
I don't think that the bolt is part of the plastic air plenum to the right. There is one longer bolt that holds it in place and I couldn't see anywhere a second bolt was needed.
Car runs fine after the job - thanks to those on this board that helped me diagnose and do the job!
