and the answer is: short distance o.k., long distance no!
Unless...
The idiot light for the alternator is an integral part of the charge circuit. without it, the alternator will not function. If you must drive for awhile without the instrument cluster, connect a small bulb, 2-5 watts, in series between the blue wire (D+) on the back of the alternator and a source for +12v. If you tap a +12v source that is on all the time, disconnect it when not driving so it won't drain the battery.
