Lifting car, suspension damaged

A friend of mine is replacing my front brake pads for me at his shop. He never works on BMWs. The first one he worked on, when he lifted the car up and the wheels hung, the suspension locked up. He had to replace the shocks on the car. Is this a normal occurence? I've seen many threads about lifting the car the same way with no problem, but no instances like this. Any help would be helpful as I am obviously new to BMWs.

My car would be a 2008 BMW 328i. Would this be fine on a normal lift by the frame?
