Trying to be helpful, I demonstrated the check control to a friend- hold button in, turn key to ignition on and voila. Only the cluster took the last word literally as the next time I turned on it told me in french to fasten seatbelts. So I said 'Pah!' - the OBC language has been changed. But it hadnt. So I hold down the button with the key in aux as I should have done in the first place. Yep. Thats it sorted. Only my mpg has just gone down from 32 to 26:( Well I know it was reading 8.8 litres per 100km so after some quick sums I concluded that must be US mpg. Back into the OBC and used the 100s button to pick UK, not the 1000s. What the difference is I dont know but it works. I am back to my normal 24hr clock, imperial mpg and temp in deg C.
Lessons learned? For me: Showing off can backfire.
For anybody else: let go of the button pretty quick after you turn the ignition on!
