Differences between early and late clusterboards?

To begin, could somebody link me to information, or explain basically how it is constructed? How many boards are involved and what controls what, or what specifically goes wrong?

My 89 E34 has a certain one, but I read that there are indeed differences and I'm curious about what differences or improvements may have been made between the two. Also, when did any changes occur, and what models were involved?

It seems to be difficult to find solid information on the net.

I ask because I received a cluster, part number 62111390331.
I found information that mentioned this as an e32 part, and I was curious if they were used in both E34 and E32 models.

What are the differences between the pre-feb 89 clusterboards and the post feb 89 clusterboards???

E34 and E32 are basically the same, except some E34 clusters in EURO version without check control.
