I went to change the air filter today and noticed that this one hose is really brittle in the bottom. It's the accordion shaped hose next to the air filter box, the one with the red dot on it in the picture below. Air intake boot/hose? I went to grab it to slide it out of the way and put my finger through it...woops...got it healed with duct tape but I need to replace it before vacation..

204k on the car, looking at 300k before either I sell her or my daughter inherits her.

which engine? On my E32 I have the cool air duct for the alternator there. Very important to have cool air for the alternator to cool it.
On the E38 the alternators are even water cooled.

That's exactly what my intake is on my M50.

M50. That's a picture of another engine...it's the flexible hose that runs over the alternator. I can't find it at Pelican.

I can see it's a different engine than the M50. But that is nevertheless what I have in my engine bay, and I know it well from removing that part quite a few times already whilst changing bulbs, replacing my headlights with H1 projectors... and what not.

As to why this is there, in yours... how should I know.

*Sigh* I didn't question your vast knowledge. I asked what the name of the part was, that was it. Alternator air boot.

Thanks, Shogun. Found it...wasn't in the parts list where I expected it but you learn something new every day.

Ah, crap. It's the alternator's cooling admission on my M50.

yeah kinds strange it looks like something else is why I didn't comment. On my V8 it comes under and int the back which does seem a bit wrong but them then German folks did a lot of stuff against my thinking. I suspect an usurped education myself.
