Hey Everyone,

It looks like the rear engine seal is going out on my 540i, but unfortunately the Bentley doens't explain how to replace it! I haven't had the best of luck finding anything posted on this repair and couldn't find anything in the archives, any suggestions?

While I'm in there replacing the rear output shaft seal, any other recommendations as to what else should be replaced? Does anyone have a writeup on the M60 engine on how to do this?

Thanks!

-Eric

Its pretty straight forward, I did it when I did my auto to 6 speed swap. I used a seal puller and gently replaced it and used the old seal to tap the new seal into place. Just be ready for a little oil to run out when you remove the old seal. If you havent had the transmission out before make sure you have air and impacts. Worbly sockets and a long extension. If you have an auto a transmission jack is advisable as that is one heavy transmission.
