How to drive "M" mode properly

I only use 'S' or "E' mode for daily driving and have never used "M' mode before. How to drive in 'M' mode properly? Can I keep accelerating when gear up or not apply brake when gear down. Please advise friends.

I use M when the road conditions are crappy, like snow/sleet/ice. When you're in M you have to manually change gears, which you do by pulling the indent in and shifting. You will have to shift lest you do evil things. I don't think the car would like to run around at 6500rpm in 1st for too long. :)
