Good video for how to. I noticed something at the end that makes me wonder so I will ask. The transmission was in SD not AD what is up with that? My new car does that SD at times and at other times it is AD? my preference is SD as the car has more bite.

you might have to clean the switch.

Default is always the economy, in case of my car the switch is S-E-M, so it is always on E when I switch ignition on.

A is adaptive, S is sport - these are the options I have, no economy for me. Now I know how to fit one all I need to know is where to get one!

the chip shown in the video is from me. Standard performance chip on the German 7-forum in E32 730/740 V8, E34 530/540 V8 and E31 840 V8.
But that chip is for the Motronic -404.
You mention
"UK 1997 e34 540iA Touring"
that probably has the newer Motronic -484, as also used in early E38.
My chip does not work on the -484 Motronic. The chaps in Germany have tried it, but engine did not start. They assume it is caused by the EWS in the -484.
I have heard that on the -484 you need to reprogram the new chip also the EWS data of the individual car.

already since some years, read the threads of the German 7-forum for Rottaler2 chips, plenty of people use them.
Or this one > 9000 hits, 150 posts
V8 chips aus dem Land der aufgehenden Sonne =
V8 chips from the land of the rising sun

M60 -404
M30 -15x and the newer 17x version (1.1 and 1.3)
M70 complete set of 3 = 2 x MOTRONIC plus EML for the max speed limiter elimination and more crispy throttle valve control,
both: prefacelift -156 Motronic, and the facelift M70 with -352 MOTRONIC.
Nothing for other engines/Motronics.

Ahh. Perhaps mine is the 484 (can't remember). I know Mark DeSylva made them for EWSII (or is it EWS-III), 95 octane and mine certainly requires an EWS compatible chip. Perhaps he now has one tuned for 98 or 100 octane. (Mine is an Austrlaian 540iLE, ie M-Sport 540i). His 'EAT Ultrachips' can be bought from Mark at http://www.d-sylvatech.ca. It made an incredible difference.

According to Real OEM my car was manufactured in Feb 1996, but it was registered in 1997 long after the e39 was already on sale.

So does that mean your chip will work? Do tell us more....what gains and how much? :)

Joe, can you give me the MOTRONIK number of the M30?
I will send you one for trial, if you do not like it, send it back, if you like it, buy it.

@leicesterboy15
I doubt it has the 404 chip, most probably the -484 already, and that is more difficult as Wokke says: quote

performance chip for 484 Motronic - possible solution

Hi to all '95 and onwards 840 owners.
Quite often I receive emails or PMs asking for a possibility to have my M60 chip also for '95 and younger 840s with the M60 engine.
As some or maybe most of you know, BMW introduced the so called EWS II in 1995 which is a car individual anti theft code being part of the Motronic chip. For this reason it is not possible to have an off the shelf product available like for the older 404 Motronic. The engine management part as such is identical but the EWS code needs to be implemented into the new chip.
This means I need the chip in order to read the program.
This has several disadvantages:
1. The car is can not be driven while the chip is travelling.
2. Installing a 404 Motronic as an interim solution doesn't work.
3. If the chip gets lost during shipment you're really screwed.

I have thought about the following solution now which might work since I assume most of you are sort of familiar with a PC:

1. I supply on a loan basis an EPROM reader incl. Windows software (deposit). Shipping is included in the chip price.
2. You install the software on your PC and read the chip
3. You email me the file
4. You return the EPROM reader back to me at your cost.
5. I will send you the individually programmed chip for your car.
6. Once I've received the EPROM reader I'll refund the deposit.

What do you guys think about this? Cheers Wolf unquote

that was back in 2008, have not seen such as deal as far as I know.
I will stick to the older Motronik's like -404, M30 and M70 chips, that I know how to handle.

The DME in both of the 530s I've had are also -404.
The friend who bought one of mine is interested in a performance chip for it. I have a spare DME already opened and waiting. I'd be happy to be the guinea pig for this application.
Shogun please PM me for purchase info.

One of Shogun's chips going into an otherwise dead stock '94 530i/5 soon.
I'll have two seperate DMEs so back to back comparisons will easy. No dyno runs unless someone wants to sponsor it but a full report from the ass dyno is promised.

Oh, Shogun, I took note and had a laugh at the edit in your tutorial while seperating the two circuit boards. I must have struggled for fifteen minutes to get the one board loose of the clips at the harness connector.
