Is there one on a 1990 535I? The reason I ask is that is smells sometimes and I suspect the PO was a smoker. Plus I'm sure at one point in it sitting for 6 years, some mice may have moved in and left stuff there.

not sure till you check it. 1990 probably not, but even BMW is not so sure about that.
