Lately, my clutch felt like it would engage the gears when I lift off of the clutch pedal only an inch or two (i.e. very near the floorboard). But this is not consistent. Other times it would be fine all within one drive. It only started the last couple of days. I had the same clutch feeling on a 1990 Toyo Supra. It ended up being the clutch cylinder. I checked the brake fluid level and it was fine. Anyone have suggestions, is this an indication that the clutch master and slave cylinders are going bad?

Thanks!

Daskoff, try sitting on a flat surface, then putting in the clutch (in gear) and waiting for an extended period (30-45sec +). If the car starts to creep then you know you have a leak either in the master or slave cylinders. I can't immediately think of a way to isolate which cylinder it would be, if there is leakage. Lemme think on that one...maybe Winfred or Bill R. have some advice?

Cheers,

I'll try that. What's got me confused is that the problem is intermitten. When I drove in to work this morning, no problems. Last night, leaving work, the gear would engage with the pedal a couple of inches off of the floor board. I'll try and check under the car today for leakage on the slave cyclinder.

My exprience in having both master and slave cylinders fail was that increased "dead" feeling in the clutch pedal for a longer period of travel = master leak (it's right behind the pedal), the slave cylinder I had go bad made the pedal much harder to push.

But that's just my experience...
