my center console (the one around the shifter) was made out of wood veneer with a thick layer of varnish. Over the years this had acquired a lot of scratches from stuff moving around on it.

I took the "wooden" part off, sanded it down with a 1500 grit wet sand paper to eliminate major scratches, then used turtle wax rubbing compound to polish out the sand paper marks. another layer of regular automotive wax finished it off nicely. unfortunately i didnt take any before and after pictures. I may however do the shifter now as well, if there is interest I can document that.

As for the of topic, here is a link to some car pictures ive been taking, I am developing a portfolio and took some pictures of GTI's and a volvo XC90 (it is not easy to make a volvo flatter). If the E34 didnt have its door weather strip removed it would have been included in the shoot as well.
