How do you use these things? I have a light grey "T" shaped plug that goes through the cars carpet into the body. Then there is a black 2-piece "lock" with the writing "Racemark Mat-Lock" I cannnot figure how the two - gray and black - interact. I'm tired of leaning over having to pull my floor mats up from under my pedal.

That nub is split, sorta springloaded, and fits into the carpets grommet hole. If you don't have the nub on the opposite side of the connector away from the T, then it has broken off and can be replaced for cheap.

Or just put some screws from above into the holes in the mats down into the holes in the floorboard. Button head screws, especially black ones, wouldn't look too bad.

Got any pics. Nothing seems broken but nothing fits together.

For my E32 there are 2 different length for the floor mat lock, depending what kind of carpet is installed (thickness is different), here the one I use

same part number also fits on many E34
