Are there any other 5 speed transmission options for an e34 535? (other than260 getrag) as they seem to be a rare commodity..... Has anyone ever tried bolting an e34 M5 tranny to a e34 535. I believe that the e34 M5 used a 280 getrag, but dont quote me.

Hi,

I remember looking closely at an E34 M5 gearbox when I had my 535i box replaced. While they are very similar, the bolt pattern is different enough that you can't use the M5 gearbox. Believe me, I gave it a long, hard look!

Thanks.... did u have your transmission rebuilt or did you stick in a used transmission from another 535?

Hi,

I went with a factory remanufactured gearbox and I'm glad I did. The first one they put in caused a tremendous clattering of the dual-mass flywheel and input shaft combination. I actually started an email exchange with Getrag in Germany over it and their explanation was that there may be a combination of flywheel and gearbox that is "unstable". Basically, the input shaft "flicks", which the dual-mass is supposed to damp out. Sometimes it just doesn't work right.

A second factory-rebuilt gearbox was dropped in and all was well.
