I own some software and hardware from Palmer Performance for a 2003 vehicle I owned.
I've ordered a round BMW plug with RS232 plug for the 1993 E34 525i touring but Palmer have since told me that their software won't cover it. Theirs is only OBDII from 1996 onwards compatible.

Can anyone tell me what software I could download or purchase that might work for the BMW please?

PS: I tried the ignition on and press the accelerator pedal 5 times in quick succession, but nothing happens - no indicator light or anything. According to the manual, if there's no fault code, I should still get a code of 14444 to tell me everythings okay.

I think the "stomp" test only works on US cars.

You could try these:

or build your own from here:

The first one is Carsoft based and you will have up and running in 10 minutes. It will take you that long to read the assembly instructions on the second one. Then a few hours to solder it together and sort out the software:D If you dont have a laptop with a built in com port beware as neither may work correctly without it.
