Yesterday we opened up a starter motor from a 10/1988 M70 750 parts car, which we wanted to to check before we stock it for emergency need for one of our shade tree mechanic buddies. It was still working. Much to our surprise the planetary gear was made of plastic instead of metal.
Turned out that the gear was made in 08/1988, and apparently Bosch/BMW then later changed the gear from plastic to metal.
planetary gear 12411736763
old p/n 12411736760
2.2 kW motor starter 12411711403
reman Bosch starter p/n from BMW 12411720246

Anyone knows the part numbers from Bosch for BMW 12411736763 ?
For the outer toothed rim of the planetary gear I found a shop in Germany, but still have to check the part number.
For a complete overhaul we want to replace items 6, 9-RS, 10, 12 and 17.

The part number of the complete motor starter from Bosch is # 0001218027, produced 08/1988
When we had removed the planetary gear, it fell into pieces, completely cracked.
It must be said, that the motor itself was in a very good condition, just needed cleaning, the brushes look like new.
It will probably be not so easy to get the brushes pushed back when inserting the other parts again, any ideas? The exciter winding has 4 countersunk head screws 12411720439 but the head is very big and we did not have the right tool to get the out with a normal screwdriver, therefore we bought a impact driver set with such big bits. That is for losening screws or nuts. Easy to use, insert a suitable bit into the holder set bit in screw head. Strike/hit end of handle with a hammer and screw will hopefully turn left or right depending on handle adjustment.
Hope these pics help you to R&R the starter motor, be prepared for surprises when you open it, but apparently the motor and the brushes are not the problem when a motor start stops working.

Now we have to find a source for the parts.

We have made a lot of pics which are of interest to you when you want to R&R a motor starter,
