Hey everyone,

This might be a silly question, but here goes anyway.

I *might* be getting my hands on a set of 17" t-stars (it's a fleabay auction so there's a good chance someone will outbid me), I was wondering though will putting these on throw the speedometer out? At the moment I have 15" basketweaves.

TIA.

With the right size tires the difference on the speedometer should stay within 1-2%. The difference should not be large enough to cause any concern.

With the right size tires? How do I know if they're right or not?

The size of the tires for sale are 235/45, and are claimed to come off an E34 M5.

I thought I was the only person interested in those ones. ;)

Gah! Competition! :P

BTW, sidenote: i have 15" basketweaves (I thought I wrote that before in my previous post, but it's not showing? weird).

I've got them on now and checked my speedo against a couple of other cars following at a set speed... It seems fine with 23/45/17's all round. :D

Go for it, they look amazing and handle well.

Use this tool: http://www.miata.net/garage/tirecalc.html
It'll let you compare the overall diameter of the tires you have now and the tires installed on the new wheels. The diameters should be as close to each other as possible. If new tires are larger in diameter, the speedo will read low.

Hi,

May I suggest that you don't want to put 235/45 R17 all round as this is wrong ?

I'm pretty sure that throwing stars are 9 inches width for the rears and 8 inches for the fronts so the fronts should be 235/45 R17 but the rears should be 255/40 R17

See here (http://felgenkatalog.auto-treff.com/?felge=210)for more info

This is the same size as my styling 18s (http://felgenkatalog.auto-treff.com/?felge=180) which are just about to go back on after a year with E39 15' alloys :)

You'll know if you've got it wrong (9' on the front, 8' on the rear) when you hear a scrapy-scrapy sound when turning !

(not sure if they will actually contact the arches but this is the case with an E46 and the same wheel size.
Go on, ask me how I know ? :( )

Well I've decided against buying the rims. They're not in fantastic condition, tyres would need to be replaced not long after purchase, star covers are damaged (hard to find replacements in Australia) and the guy's asking a lot even for the starting bid. Myles you're more than welcome to bid on them if you want to.

I believe these rims are 8" all round, and not staggered. Hence them being 235 all round.

Saw the auction finish without a bid, did you have second thoughts myles?

Yeh I did, just too much money for me at the moment. Maybe in a few months.
