My 540 was wrecked.

I haven't decided what to do with it. I haven't seen it in the daylight to assess the damage yet but I am reasonably sure it is totaled. The accident occurs Sunday evening. Tuesday morning I traveled out of the country.
For argument sake if I want to transplant the drive train to another e34 with a good body, can I use a 530 if I cannot find a suitable 540? Let me put it this way, what are the major differences between a e34 530 and a e34 540 other than the engine and transmission. If I want to do I would not consider a 525. There is too much work.
