In late 1995, just prior to switching to the E39 5-series body style for the 1997 model year (there is no such thing as a U.S. 1996 model year 5-series), BMW pumped one last breath of life into the V8 powered, E34-bodied, 540i for the U.S. market: The 1995 540i Sport . They did this by using almost all of the parts that went into the European 1995 6-cylinder E34 ///M5, except the engine and transmission. 200 of these 540i Sport models were sold in the U.S. 135 of them had the 6-speed manual transmission and the rest (65) had the automatic.

so at 65 would be a rarity?Sure, but not desired. ;)

Oops. I see someone did a tranny-ectomy on it. A "professional" but can't kill the trans. program light? Hmmm. Well, it's better than an automatic, that's for sure. How that affects the value we'll find out shortly, won't we?

The pictures do work. The two missing pictures in the first post are in the follow-up.

Yes, the '95 540iA M-Sport is rather rare. Makes it difficult to find one, especially if you're looking for a particular color combo. Took me 2 1/2 years to find mine.

Too bad it's not stock anymore. Took the EDC out. And swapped the tranny. I think there were only 2 red on black autos built. Guess now there's probably only one.

Looks like someone bought it. But we'll never know the transaction price.

It's back! Must have pulled it on a promise to buy and than had a no-show. He says local buyer couldn't get a loan. Maybe. Always bad form that leads to suspicions about problems with the car for the next auction, but here it is: http://ebayitem.com/250361330190

If you look at the pictures, you see a bit of bug/stone damage like we see on most of our cars.

Overall it looks darn good. However, my car and I would suspect, most of our cars are in as good or better condition. As stated by others, I would want to know more about the six speed conversion.

What u want is a 840ci with 6 speed and S62.

Failing that, a 540i with a M62 and a 6 speed, or an auto... waiting on finding a 6 speed.

There are other options now they sell V8s with strong manual boxes... but not bolt-in and will require careful planning around drive shaft and ideal ratios. The new cars have must more Lowe end torque so the gearing may not work so well with an M62- just whatever you do don't buy a box they put behind a diesel motor, it'll probably never work right.
