The 796 bulb gives you almost 100% more light when you shift into Reverse, without any heat and power draw concerns. This ultra long life upgrade replaces the following standard bulbs:

•European P21W or 7506

•American 1156, 1073, or 1141

These seem to be the most cost effective answer to dim back-up lights for our cars. However, has anyone tried them?

...and I have had no issue with them. The higher draw is inconsequential since the reverese lights are on so little anyway.

Good to know. I just bought a used working set of 796 bulbs off e-bay for $8 to see if of value. I understand one use is for emergency light bars. Anyone know of a type of place that would sell them locally? I doubt if AZ or or Advance Auto would have them.

796 bulbs work as backup lights are now brighter with only a small increase in heat. I tested with backup lights on for about 3 minutes.

I think the most effective way to get brighter light for backing up is to use the factory rear fog light kit... I think there is a cutout on bumper thing... and hooking it up to the reverse light circuit via relay.

I had that on my MB... it is brighter but doesn't shine where it needs to be... that is dependent on factory taillight design.

I think I have them on my car, well I bought some candlepower bulbs many years ago and no problems. I replaced all the rear ones.
