I popped in a few last week and they all generally had the same scent. Sure, laugh that it's decaying foam and whatnot, but they're very similar.

Anyone seriously notice that? Or maybe it's just nostalgia kicking in everytime I sit in one...?

Perhaps too much fiber in your diet?

The characteristic smell is probably caused by the types of materials used in the interior. Other cars smell different because they use different types of plastic, leather, cloth and whatever else makes the interior. That's probably why you recognize a unique smell. For what its worth, my dad's old E32 735iL smelled like my car.

i think older bmw's, e30, e32, e34 have pretty much the same scent inside....especially the e34's compared one to another.

I have noticed that older BMW's and Mercedes tend to have a similar smell.

A lot of the girl that come in my car say it smells like crayons, but I think that may have to do with the fact I use SimpleGreen :D

I have noticed it between my current car and my 530. My uncle also commented on how older BMWs share the same smell.

+1 +1 +1 on the crayons dude. :D wax crayons to be specific. i noticed this recently in an E34 i was in...relatively strong paraffin wax odor (like that $hit on old canvas tents or tarps) the odor was enhanced as the car got warm; i thought it was coming from the firewall?!?!?

short answer...yes. I haven't been in my car for so long I don't remember how to describe it, but it had a smell that made it seem.. old. Gave it character.

Could be that early "environmentally friendly" glue they used - I am statring to see the stuff let go, especially in the door panels - Gorilla Glue to the rescue.

the one thing that may be unique to someone new to BMW or any other high end luxury euro: WOOL carpet. Ever notice some people have the striping effect in their carpet> It's from hitting wool with steam, you can groom the nap. You can't so that too well to the synthetics found in American made vehicles.
Wool has a very unique smell when aged and exposed to moisture over time. Combine that with the bison leather on nearly every surface in the cabin and you have the smell of victory.
