What is this thing?

I've never seen this connector before in an E34. Can anyone tell me what it is for?

radio plug?

I found it sitting below the radio in the dash, when I took the radio out. It wasn't connected to anything and everything else seems to be working in that area. ....Unless the thumbwheel in the center vent is supposed to glow....I suppose this could be for that, but I was told the 95 center vents didn't glow even though the vents in the older cars do.
