Chrome....I had taken mine off and black taped them....looks ALOT better.

ok - because the outside ones look like stainless. the inside ones tarnished in a completely different way,

Mine are chrome outside, and inside. Of course, being exposed to the elements makes a difference in how they tarnish. Likely your outside ones have been sanded or replaced for that look. They are made of aluminium and bend real easy. I don't think the inside ones are aluminium though because when I took them off, they hardly bent any. I think they may be plastic with a chrome finish. Part of them are plastic anyhow.

inside ones are aluminum.

I wet sanded them the other night with 320 and the water/residue turned immediately black... which i have only seen with aluminum.

nice brushed finished on mine now.

Yes, aluminum. I think they are clear coated originally this is why they resist polishing unless aggressive means like sandig are used first. The outside trim I believe is polished stainless steel.
