My E34

Hello all,

About two months ago I got my first E34, a 95' 525iA. Since then I've put on about 300 miles on the car as I didn't trust driving it. My main concern was that the front end would play hop scotch above 55mph. It wasn't a shimmy, it was literally hop scotch. After compiling a large list of repairs that need to be done, I can finally drive her. I have new thrust arms, tie rods, sway bar bushings and end links in the front suspension(with the help of my brother). Cooling system is redone including all hoses, metal impeller water pump, and metal thermostat housing. Transmission filter and fluid was also changed, along with the driveshaft flex disc, rear output flange seal, and currently trying to tackle the gear selector seal. New brakes all around including rotors. To top it all off it has new tires as the old ones were bald.

When I first got it, the paint was like sand paper. After a clay bar, and lots and lots of hand waxing, the paint is smooth as butter. Anyways onto the pics.

Instead of posting a new thread I will ask the question here. How do I change my power steering fluid? On my Honda you have to siphen it out.

nice car-

i used a turkey baster, same difference. i found that if you bleed it first (basically crank it full left and right a couple times with it idling and the lid off) a lot more of the cruddy stuff makes it up to the reservoir. there is a filter in there you can change (i didn't).

Thanks for the input. I need to fix my leaking gear selector seal. I already replaced it twice but both times I messed up on getting the new seal in. After some reading I figured out that theres a special tool that drives the seal in. All the tool is is just cylinder in shape and it gets pushed by the nut that holds the lever on. So what I had planned was to get a few washers that would not damage the seal, and use the lever as another washer and drive the seal in.

This is almost the same as my E34 when I first got it ... 95 525i, oxford green, even almost the same mileage (mine had 180,000km - 111,000 miles on it when purchased). Only difference is the steering's on the other side and I have a different coloured interior.

get as much old stuff out as you can, on the bottom of the steering pump is a drain plug. Remove that plug, start the car and gently turn the steering all the way from one side to the other to get most of the remaining out. Add fresh juice and repeat, you will be clean again.

Regal- Thanks for the input. I tried looking for the drain plug on the pump and all I found was where the lower hoses attaches to the pump, if that is the drain plug then I should change the fluid.

Sam-Son- I'd love to come out to that meet but its 4hours away and I have school. Maybe as time gets closer I will see about going but for now I can't. I still have to change my diff fluid, brake fluid, rear sway bar end links and dog bones, transmission mounts, and locate the engine cover that is under the car.

Thanks. I wish the car was as good mechanically as it is interior wise. All of that is getting slowly fixed though, its going to be daily driven now.
