View Full Version : can i mix synthetic oils?

sorry if this is a lame question. i am running synthetic that my bmw mech. recommended, and i noticed this a.m. that my oil needs to be topped off. can i do this with any synthetic....or do i have to find out which he used?

Sure... even mixing with Dino oil is okay too because it will become a 'Synthetic Blend'

true to a point, according to Dick they have different molecular structures and tend to seperate in the pan after sitting a while, I would ask and get the same brand and weight that he used until YOU do YOUR next oil change.

I emailed Mobil 1 if I could mix different weight and they replied that I shouldn't and stick to same grade. I used to mix Mobil 1 15w-50 with Mobil 1 5w-30 since I couldn't find 10w-40 in synthetic (no Mobil 1 0w-40 at the time). Someone told me that this is no no... So I emailed Mobil 1. Straight synthetic oil don't blend well unless it was designed to like synthetic blend oils.
