View Full Version : Some kind of coil on the ignition wire

Pulled the distributor tonight and found a small coil wrapped around #6 ignition wire. The coil was broken and the wire was hanging from somewhere around the front of the engine. Anyone know what this coil is and does?

It's a pulse generator. See here for more info.

Interesting my bimmer runs great without this gizmo. I need to replace the ignition wires anyway and it looks like this pulse generator comes with the wiring harness. Also need the distributor cap and rotor. Was looking on the net to see if I can find a kit that has all three components for a decent price

it runs without problem, but needs more fuel.
You will have an improvement in fuel economy with a functioning pulse generator. The DME still gets data from the crank position sensor (which is why the car still runs, there is some redundancy in the system), so the pulse generator from the distributor lead helps the DME to "fine tune" fuel delivery.

Do yourselves a favour and buy good ones like from Bosch or Bremi, the cheapos get easily haircracks.
A new set lasts for many years to come. So do not save on the wrong end.

good price, easily beats the 500-800 $ I would have to pay for the 750 for both sides

Here is one for 108$

Yikes. The M5 thread is worthless.

The pulse generator triggers the bank fire function in the DME. When the sensor reports, the injectors fire in two groups of 3. Without the sensor, all injectors fire at one time.

The Motronic 1.3 DME does not have sequential injection.

I've never really been able to tell the difference between mine when it works and when it doesn't.

triggers one bank of three injectors every other revolution, so its not true sequential injection where each injectors is triggered when that cylinder needs it. Its semi sequential, triggers 3 injectors one revolution then the other 3 the next revolution.. If it fails or goes bad , it reduces the amount injected by each bank by one half and then triggers them every revolution. So you get half as much gas injected, twice as often.

Thank you master Tech Bill!
That was also new to me
