View Full Version : who has interest in Herb's cupholders?

As Herb did not offer them the past months I have contacted him via his private email.
His reply:

Hello Erich,
Here is the situation with the cupholder. We made the mold and ran
the initial quantity of parts. I sold the last of the parts about a month ago and the only way to sell more is if I have another molder make them for me. My cost for a limited number of parts is a bit over $1200. That means I'm out of pocket until I sell about 40 cupholders. If we can do that I'll have the parts made.

The cupholder price has been $29.95USD for the past several years, and seems to be reasonably well accepted. Shipping/handling has been $8.50 for US and Canada. To Europe and your area (Asia)the shipping cost is higher, but not a huge differential. As far as RHD is concerned, I think I should refrain from that option. Herb
-----------------
Additional info from my side: that cupholder does not fit on consoles which have the holder for ASC and/or EDC.
Fits on E34 and E32.
It fits, however, on center consoles for automatic transmissions and for manual gears/shifters.
Here are the pics how they look. Please post if any interest, then I will inform Herb and he has to decide to go ahead or not. I will link this post also on other boards. If he goes ahead, you can buy them on Ebay.

Kris, most important thing is: they are the most practicable. You can also use larger bottles.
Maybe of interest for you in OZ. The Americans use bigger bottles and cans than we in Japan.
I just went to the car to measure the hole diameters for the bottles/cans. It is 73 mm.
The small standard coffee/juice/soft drink cans in Japan have a diameter of only 53 mm diameter. So I used a self adhesive foam and added that inside the opening of the holder, so that the cans fit snug.

I also added a non-slip rubber mat, so that keys etc. do not move in curves.

Looks good, in total we already have from the U.S. and German boards for E34 and E32 abt. 10 confirmations of interest. I assume that we get our 40 sets together, which then covers the initional tool cost for Herb tp produce them.

He just sent me this email:

Erich,
Thanks for all of your efforts. I'll keep watching the boards. Hopefully we can get 25-30 interested and I will gamble on the rest

You can go with this one that doesn't mount in the shifter area.

I've got their dual cupholder in my M-Sport. Works great even under very hard driving. I couldn't use Herb's cupholder if I wanted to as I've also got ASC+T. Not sure I'd want a cupholder in the shifter area anyways...

Thanks but I don't like the look of those. Never have. I've got the BMW NA accessory cup holder that hangs on the side of the center console. It's been modified to fit on the side of the rear bin, commonly referred to as the cell-phone compartment. Works great there, stays out of my way when shifting, and holds a cell phone and some odd parts. I don't like drinking and driving!

I would've thought that the right cup holder won't sit properly due to the auto shifter being in the way -- my auto shifter is near to the driver.

well you can turn around the knob and make it face the passenger side. there is one small screw there holding it in. it should fit then fine.

I reckon a simple mod can be made to make it fit a car with ASC; simply cut a notch from the RHS to fit around the molding- or cut the molding- not sure whihc would be better.

Erich; put me down for 2 please... $60- that's a bargain. :) Nick

I will report on how well it goes on:

Thanks, I will put you on the list. Shipping within the U.S. and Canada ist $8.50, and to Europe it will be a bit more but not much, I assume around $10-15 max. by USPS global Airmail.

First of all we have to get enough together that Herb can buy the tools and starts production.
When he is ready, I will post that here and give a link to the Ebay auctions for buy now.

Even I still dump things there when being absent minded.

Hopefully this add-on will bring a bit of relaxation to the e34' interiors' "chaos of central kinetics"...

I will show your comments to my wife, she is a world champion in putting things there. I put a non slip mat on the cupholder, that helps.
But before I had the cupholder the wood console was scratched by "flying objects" such as mobile phone, keys, cigarette lighter, manicure stuff etc.

How you find this stuff I'll never know, but one day- perhaps when you are old and grey you will find out a few BMW engineers will invite you into the fold, show you a few secrets from the bad old M-factory days and throw a party in your honour for doing what the company never did... and helping to keep the fruits of their hard work well placed in the history books- and a few lucky owners' garages...

Thank you... (and of course Herb too)- this is fantastic work on our behalf!

Kris,
I am in Germany at the moment, no fast email and limited access. Try to contact him thru the Ebay system again, maybe he was busy or spam filter?
I assume the cost to OZ is same or similar as to Germany.
No worry about qty, that is the first batch he produced with the new tools, he can produce more when first batch is sold.

PS: was at a crazy 7 meet last Saturday in Mainz-Kastel in Germany, >70 people there, meeting place was the used E32/E34 parts shop of Andre Abenson, he arranged everything. They built a nice BBQ grill from the trunk (cut off) of a E32. First pics are on 7-forum Germany, later more when I am back in Japan end of this week.

Hi Sonny,

about 2 weeks ago I contacted him as he forgot to renew the add on Ebay. It is here now
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/BMW-Cupholder-E32-E34-735-740-525-535-Cup-holder_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQ_trksidZp3286Q2ec0Q2em14Q QhashZitem2a0135b8b8QQitemZ180408924344QQptZMotors Q5fCarQ5fTruckQ5fPartsQ5fAccessories
special price.
He mentioned that he still has about 100 pieces on stock.

I got mine and fitted them to RHD. due to the orientation of the dash angle being opposite on RHD to LHD, one cupholder can only carry change, not a cup.

So at the moment, I can only use to outer holder, closest to my leg :( But with care, they work, both on manual and auto :)

It is made from vacuum formed PET, so I will cut one apart and try to create a mirror version. Will post pics of the before and after when I do.

Should be good when I''m done. ;)

finally, so it works in AUS

But for those with the ASC or EDC switch in the center console: N.G.
just tried my cupholder from Herb last weekend on the E32 Alpina B12 of my wrenching buddy, does not fit at all, one would have to cut off half of the left side cupholder to fit it, the ASC/EDC switch takes too much space there.

Lovely pics mate... These show the installation in a RHD car.

I didn't think they'd fit your auto very well but you can see they do, sort of. Go nice in the manual. just need to swap that old wooden stick for a modern e39/46 one! :) Nick

Yep. Beware though, the holder on the passenger side is good for a mobile phone- a drink will not go in there with the dash angled above it the way it is on a RHD car.
But the left one is usable, and the tray is a better than the slide board that BMW never thought about storage with.

I was going to make a hybrid out of fibreglass nad Herb's excellent holders, that would go round the whole shifter a la the nice M5 gear shift surround but incorporate the holder/s and a set of gauge holes. The problem is mkaing it LHD & RHD compatible... (thinking) oh yea, and work for auto and manual... LOL!

So this is really only functional for the RHD and not the LHD?

No, on LHD you can use two cup holders, but for RHD you can only use one cup holder - the one closest to your leg.

Too bad you can't flip it.

I was going to cut 2 up to make one good one for RHD, but gave it to Kris instead. Who needs two holders? The inaccessible one is good for even big mobile phones and Ipods tho, it can sit up and one can see the screen light up...

No good for M5s though, the gearshift surround interferes. We should mod the design for Herb and get him to make a RHD one that fits regardless of RHD, ASC+T switch and M5 capable.... LOL
