or you could post your vin or chassis number and we could tell you what bmw think it is.Open the bonnet.Do you see"BMW M Power" and six seperate throttle bodies if you dont its not an M5.The other possibility is that at some time in its life it has had m5 transplant(s)

New to this, new to BMW's. The car is registered here as a 535 yet has M5 badges and appears to have some M5 features. Had it inspected today and the authorities say that they can see no obvious signs of modification.

I would like to know what I have, is it an early M5 or 535. I will post pics if someone can tell me what to take pictures of or look for. It may have been 'mis registered' or had some mods done that were done well in the past.

It could be a 535is.
A 535iS is a 535i but includes the BMW factory 'M' Sport package.

To my knowledge these weren't available in the U.S. but did appear in Japan, Australia and New Zealand.

Paul from New Zealand has one of these...

Here's his...

http://www.bimmer.info/bmw/kiwi535/index.html

Jump through the pages and you'll see enough pictures to get an idea.

If it is a genuine 'iS' it should have the Recaro style sports seats (with thigh supports) front and rear spoilers and skirts, M-Tec 2 steering wheel, sports suspension and a LSD. Engine performance was the same as the standard 535i.

Ultimately a VIN search should prove whether you have a genuine 'iS' or not.

Thanks guys. VIN last digits are BF52325. It is still dark here but will take some photos later and post them.

I like the car. It is in good overall condition, goes like a rocket and would like to spend some time removing the tatty bits and making it look real nice again. Just not sure what I should be restoring it back to if you know what I mean.

This much I can say. Reg in UK in 1989, all imperial dash, electric sunroof, AC unit, auto with M,S selector and seems to be centre push this selector for E.

Only bought it Tuesday and have only done 40 odd K's in it getting quotes etc to do some repairs for warrent of fitness.

tried to upload some pics but rescaling from 4meg to 19k - cant see any detail worth looking at. Can post direct at about 300k if anyone interested enough.

Please ask questions, I can answer them easily if I know what I am looking for. Previous owner says original black leather seats were trashed and replaced by cloth seats before he bought it (alas, such a shame). Aside M5 badge on back, there is M-badge just left (RHD) of air duct on upper dash and M-badge on front grill passenger side. Steering wheel has M-badge colours on the rings outboard of the three spokes. There is a colour label inside the engine bay BMW-alpinweibII (alpine white?), the manafold has 3.5 cast into it and the rocker cover has BMW cast into it.
