This is well document design deficiency on the M60 engine. The bolt is from the oil pump. Search the web.

In the oil pan of the m60 I scrapped. Count the number of bolts which fell off.

The oil pump on the replacement M60 removed.

I dented the nut to prevent the oil pump sprocket from coming loose.

No bolt in the pan on the new M60.

Sheared the oil change nut off when changing the oil to go to a local BMW event :(

Pulled off the oil pan and there were two bolts in the pan. Of course I'm freaking out, but after taking a close look around, it appears that only one of the oil pump bolts is out, so where did the other bolt come from?

All of the bolts are accounted for on the accessible parts of the engine from under the car, to about 6" up or so.

The bolt is 1 1/2" and the head is 10mm. Writing on the head says, "Kamax 88"

looks like one of the bolts that hold the two halves of the oil pump together, they go in from the back side and fall out like they are designed to, the 3 bolts that hold the pump to the block get loose too and if they are loose enough you may need to tighten the chain that drives the pump, theres a big nut that you back out that one of the 3 bolts goes though

I am a little confused. What are the sizes of bolts which dropped? The M6 is between the two halves of the pumps. There are thee bolts on the oil pump base. Each leg has a nut further down (or up with the engine upright) to adjust the chain tension. They are M8.

This picture shows all three bolts at the oil pump base.

Only one of the two bolts was one of the three bolts that hold the oil pump. I pulled them out one by one and retightened them using the permatex red threadlocker.

I looked up as far as I could up the backside of the oil pump where all the bolts are and didn't see any missing ones. Looking at the picture Yaofang put up, I might have missed a bolt on the top side of the oil pump which I couldn't see.

Any chance there are bolts of this size higher up in the engine? If it's just an oil pump bolt, I'm not as worried as if it were a bolt in the head or off the crankshaft.

thx guys.
