Hi there,

I have a friend needing a transmission swap. He has an 89 M30 E34.

According to realoem the 1989 BMW E34 535 auto came with two different tranny's depending on when manufactured. The transmission changed again in late 90 to a newer style again.

I'm not sure of the build date of his 89 (not near car) so the one in the car now is either:

4HP22-EF (early 89)
4HP22-GE (late 89 up to 9/90)

The one I can get is from a 1992 and is a 4HP22-HR (9/90 - thru end of production)

Is the 92 swappable into the 89? I've heard that there are electrical plug differences but not sure if they can be overcome through a pigtail swap of some sort?

they run a different computer and harness from the early to late, the way i split the difference is the early car has a 3 position selector switch with E S M and the late car has a 2 position with A M i guess you could swap the tranny the harness and computer, externally they are the same tranny

Ok thanks... so a direct bolt in and can be made to work electrically with extra harness and computer from donor car.
