Can a failing thermostat be related to coolant loss?

Hey guys.

Quick question: Can a bad/lazy/failing thermostat cause coolant loss?

I think I have established that the thermostat needs to be changed (cool spots on main hose), in relation to overheating problems. Thing is, that I've also experienced a wierd coolant loss (sometimes litres a day), and the two things seem to be related.

Do I have one or two problems?

ps. No coolant in engine oil.
pps. No engine oil in coolant
ppps. No apparent leak anywhere.
pppps. Thermostat issue is not constant, but appears to coincide with the coolant issue.

any thoughts?
