Hey guys, Got a 89 e34 and the horn has stopped working, i pushed the horn button on the steering wheel really hard and the horn did sound for a second or so and then stopped, i got told it is the carbon brush on the steering column that the slip ring brush contacts that makes the horn work. What number on the upper steering column diagram below is the carbon brush ?

Thanks guys

Can't answer your question, but I do know that's a diagram of a non-airbag steering column. The parts are quite different for an airbag equipped car.

I'm kind of with bubba966 on this: that diagram doesn't seem to show either a slip ring or carbon brushes. All the parts shown on that diagram look as if they're purely mechanical things such as springs and washers. Can you find another diagram?

I think you need to be looking at a different diagram such as this http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts.do?model=HC23&mospid=47402&btnr=32_0604&hg=32&fg=35

Sounds like you're possibly looking for #4 in that diagram. But I just guessed on a build date and car configuration and steering wheel.

What's the build date, engine, sedan or touring, US or Europe, LHD or RHD, transmission type, and which steering wheel?

Hey guys just relised that was the wrong diagram i have attached a new diagram of the steering lock/ignition switch that is on my car for the model and year it was manufactured, i got told that the carbon brush is located within this diagram, does anybody know what number the carbon brush is on this diagram below that contacts the slip ring on back of steering wheel to make the horn sound? the car is a 1989 520i sedan m20 engine, european model, right hand drive with a manuel transmission.

thanks guys

Well, now that we've got more info and the proper diagram it looks like you should be replacing #7, the 'carbon pin'

I'm with bubba's carbon pin #7. To me, #11 looks more like some weird single-use fastener. Not that I've ever taken this area of the car apart.

#11 looks like the spring loaded pin for canceling the turn signals. I did have all of this apart on my car last week (how I know the first diagram was for a non-airbag car as I got the wrong part from the dealer), but I've got an airbag, an auto, and EWS II, so most of my parts are rather different.
