Sounds like ICV... No easy way to get to it on V8.

Are all plugs like that?

Any change in exhaust? More smoke?

Is it only crappy at idle?

No, it's crappy all over! lol
Starts, but runs rough.
It ran about the same with maf disconnected, so makes me think it is in some failsafe modus.
Disconnected the battery for the night.
It will rev up sitting in neutral, but not in gear.
Hardly any "pull"
Only pulled one plug before I lost daylight.
Spark is fine, at least the one I checked.

Experienced with older motors, but this is my first BMW. So ICV is what?

First post.

Tried to search.....

I have a 94 E34 540. It ran fine going to work, but when I started it to go home it did not!
Real loopy idle and hardly runs at all.
Pulled a plug, and it is black with sot, so something's up with fuel delivery.
Makes me think MAF.
Any ideas?

Maybe it's not the problem but when Tiger referred to the ICV he was referring to the Idle Control Valve (not that I've got a psychic link with Tiger, it's just that's what the Idle Control Valve is commonly referred to).

do you only have a problem in auto? i have a 95 540 and it runs like crap in auto drive, but better in manual. it needs new o2 sensors bc it is running way to lean. my idle has dropped to 550rpms. pretty low.

Well, it's not the MAF or the ICV.
Has anyone ever had the intake air temp sensor go bad?
Read somewhere that it will go rich if it fails.
And it is rich!
Luckily I have another motor, so I'll try switching it out tomorrow.
I also ordered two new lambda sensors, just in case.

The ICV is the easiest parts to get to on the M60. It is located right on top of the engine on the radiator side near the end of the intake.
