Auto tranny definitely have a pump. It is the first thing you take off when rebuilding.

Anyone know a method of checking that automatic gearbox fluid is circulating through the cooling system properly?
Anyone know how the circuit actually works, i.e is there a pump in the gearbox, or is it due to pressure alone?
Cheers
Pete

If the car moves the pump works. You could disconnect the cooling lines and blow through them to check for flow.

Thanks guys....from the two replies given, can I assume the pump never fails?

Pumps can and do fail.
What exactly are you trying to do?

Hi Ross,
My gearbox is getting hot like never before, but the fluid does not smell burnt. I'm just trying to learn as much as I can about possible causes.
Poor fluid circulation seems logical.

Hmmm, are the lines to and from the cooler getting hot? Operation otherwise normal?
What brings you to the conclusion that it is too hot?
