Sounds like the coolant temp sensor is going bad...

when i start the car in the morning it shuts off at about 10 mins. then when i start it again it will stay running but then the temp. gauge goes straight to hot. But when i shut it off and restart it, it goes back to normal but the temp. only stays a hair over cold.
any advice helps thanks.

Dodgy thermostat would cause the car to overheat or stay cold for longer (Changing mine this weekend!). Your random guage action though must be sensor related as advised above... Wouldn't explain the shutting off though...

You could have a bad temp gauge sensor.

Dont think its the sensor but rather the sender unit that's playing up
