A lower cost alternative to the uber expensive motor and squirrel cage assembly sold by the Bavarians is to use the motor intended for a Mercedes 190E (W201). Bosch # 0 130 111 109 available @ Autohausaz for ~$90.
I tried the Fasco motor suggested in another post but was unable to get it to seat properly in the holder.
The MB spec motor is essentially identical with one exception, the "can" of the motor itself is 12mm shorter than the BM job. I cut a 1/2" strip of wood to 45mm long and 12mm wide inserted it in the holder on the side opposite the motor brushes to take up the extra space.
I took some pictures and will do my first write up for you guys.

I lucked out and found a used one from a 535 at the pick and pull and a faint production date of "2001" from what I can tell on the orange sticker. Although I did hear a tiny tiny squeak the other day. Hopefully it was my imagination

I need to get the photos off the camera and also help in posting them from the GF who is somewhat less enthusiastic about cars than myself.
Novice Guru, the squeek could just be the cages rubbing because of imperfect alignment. There isn't a lot of clearance around them so a little off can make a difference.

I've done a write up but am unable to post due to size, happy to e-mail to one of you guys if you can figure out how to post it.
Sorry, I'm a dinosaur.

see your PM message, my email address is there, just send it to me and I will post it.

Or post the write up here, and use imageshack or www.photobucket.com to download the pics from your PC to there, and then just link it. I will do the same.
Thanks

The OEM blower motor is the same on E34, E31 and E32 on cars WITH aircon (yes, there are cars without aircon too)
http://www.realoem.com/bmw/partxref.do?part=64118390935&showus=on

Another possibility is to get the motor only from rockauto.com
Under E32 750 you can find the motor only, the cages you do not need anyway, can use from the old motor

BOSCH Part # 0130111032 {Blower Motor
Motor Only; No Cage #64111468542} $134.79

That is still much cheaper than the complete motor from the dealer with cage and also from Ebay, where they go around 200$ +/- 20.

The funny thing is at rockauto (which is one of the few ones which offer motors only), when you select an E34 which should have the same motor, it shows a much higher price for

ACDELCO Part # 1580170 {#88918677}
MOTOR,BLO(W/IMPLR) W/ FACTORY A/C $196.99

And ohhh wonder, when you select the E31 850, you suddenly have 3 options and it is cheaper again, hehe

BOSCH Part # 0130111032 {Blower Motor
Motor Only; No Cage #64111468542} $134.79

ACDELCO Part # 1550750 {#19144517} $115.79
SWITCH,BLO MOT TRINARY

ACDELCO Part # 1580170 {#88918677} $196.99

Great information guys. Thanks for the work. My fan is chirping like a little bird on speeds 1 and 2 so this will need to be done soon.

this thread should be made sticky also.

Yep, or it should rest in the archives. Possibly under "Body and Interior" or "Electronics and Lights and AC".??

Please :D
